Enrique Blanco, Global CTIO of Telefonica and 5TONIC’s Steering Board members Arturo Azcorra and Javier Gavilán, among the Summit speakers
Madrid, 26th of September.- The 5G Core Summit, held by Informa Tech this week in Madrid, has explored the evolution of 5G networks to support next-generation services across the globe, with the operator, vendor and enterprise ecosystem thrust firmly at the forefront.
One of the agenda’s main point of interest was the development of this next-generation technology. For these purposes, it featured several executive-level keynotes and four technical tracks. Telefónica’s speakers focused on presenting 5G Core as a critical infrastructure for society to be built in a much more resilient and robust way, and a key element to provide really useful and transformative services for society.
The keynote speakers included Enrique Blanco, Global CTIO of Telefónica, as well as two 5TONIC Steering Board members, Arturo Azcorra, 5TONIC vicechairman and full professor of University Carlos III Madrid, and Javier Gavilán, Core Network Platforms and Transport Technology Global Director at Telefonica. Additionally, a 5TONIC associated researcher, Luis Contreras of Telefónica, also participated with a keynote on “Lightweight Cloud Slicing: The NECOS Project”.
Blanco presented an evolution towards a layered, distributed, regionalized, multivendor, non-monolithic and resilient core, following a Service-Based Architecture to enable this multivendor disaggregation; while Azcorra’s keynote focused on the description of 5TONIC activities and projects, including the services co-development capabilities with Vertical Companies applying 5G features to transform industries. Javier Gavilán presented a keynote on the journey to follow from 4G EPC to 5G Core.
As a 5TONIC co-founder, Telefónica has a major role defining the objectives and open approach adopted by the lab. In this sense, they represent two sides of the same approach towards the development of future 5G networks and services.
The 5G Core Summit provided an opportunity for the main 5G actors to engage in deep-dive discussions and debates that spotlight the 5G evolution – from exploring the challenges of edge clouds and network slicing to harnessing the potential of IMS and the Road to Vo5 (Voice over 5G). In this sense, 5TONIC members can take advantage of the insight provided in the different talks and networking sessions.

5TONIC was founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute with a clear vision to create an open research and innovation ecosystem laboratory in which industry and academia come together to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development, joint entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites, all in an international environment of the highest impact. 5TONIC serves to show the capabilities and interoperation of pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications, by leading global companies in the 5G arena. The laboratory was recently awarded Digital Innovation Hub status by the European Commission.
