Arturo Azcorra, Vice President of 5TONIC and a Director of IMDEA Networks, was one of the key speakers at at the INTO 2018 International Innovation and Tourism Seminar in Mallorca last month. He took part in a session that looked at the opportunities that 5G technology offers for the innovation and development of new tourist services

This was the 13th International Seminar on Innovation and Tourism (INTO 2018) and this year the conference theme focused on the opportunities and challenges that the Internet of Things (IoT) presents for the tourism sector.

Arturo outlined the pioneering work being undertaken in 5TONIC’s European laboratory for collaboration and co-creation of 5G solutions and research into 5G technologies. Alongside Arturo for the session of the seminar looking at 5G and the IoT were Adam Levy, director of the IFEMA 5G LAB, and Álvaro Capell, Telefonica's Global Head of Big Data Consulting. Together the speakers and their companies are heavily involved in the digital transformation that is set to revolutionise economic sectors - such as tourism and trade fairs – on the heels of the widespread introduction of 5G technologies in the next two-three years.

The involvement of these companies directly supported INTO2018’s aims to promote innovation and foster competitiveness and the growth of technological industries in tourism. For the first time, the event this year also included a small exhibition area where companies and research groups could showcase solutions, products and services based on IoT for the tourism industry.

The INTO seminar is an initiative of the General Directorate of Innovation and Research of the Balearic Islands Government and is organized by the Bit Foundation
