As part of their practical activities of the Executive Master in Digital Transformation & Innovation Leadership

5TONIC showcases real use cases on autonomous vehicle 5G solutions

Madrid, November 18th, 2019. The students of the Executive Master in Digital Transformation & Innovation Leadership, that is taught by the HST School of the IE University, visited 5TONIC, the open laboratory of 5G experimentation, as part of their practical activities. The visit was promoted by 5TONIC members Ericsson and Telefónica. The students have been explained on the organization and the main activities carried out by the laboratory, as well as the use cases that are being developed in cooperation with various collaborators. One of these collaborators, ASTI, represented by José Carlos Montes, Director of R&D and IE professor, explained its technology strategy and the role that 5G communications will play in the development of future autonomous vehicle solutions and factory robots.

The students also had the opportunity to see two demos developed by ASTI and Ericsson Italy that illustrate two different approaches to how mobile communications can help in the flexibilization of the logistics and transport processes carried out by autonomous vehicles within factories. The ASTI demo validates the virtualization of the control on the vehicle inside the mobile network if the latency and reliability requirements of the application are supported. The Ericsson Italy demo shows the application of real time image recognition to guide autonomous vehicles and has been developed in the context of the European project 5G TRANSFORMER.

5TONIC laboratory has as one of its objectives the participation in education and training activities related to the 5G technology. In this sense, it participates in the Master of SDN and NFV for 5G, that organized by the University Carlos III and its currently in its third edition.
