  • IMDEA Networks has received the visit of the Secretary General of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Communication Services, the Head of the Cabinet, and the Deputy Director General of Planning and Management of the Radio Spectrum, among other high-ranking officials.
  • The visit included a tour at 5TONIC and an integrated demonstration of digital twins, with integrated sensing and robotic control by 5G at 5TONIC.

9 February 2024. IMDEA Networks and 5TONIC, the 5G technology research and innovation laboratory co-founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks, recently welcomed dignitaries from Spain’s Ministry of Digital Transformation. The delegation included Matías González, Secretary General for Telecommunications and Audiovisual Communication Services, Juan Santaella, Head of Cabinet, and Antonio Fernández-Paniagua, Deputy Director General for Planning and Management of the Radio Spectrum.

The purpose of the visit was to learn first-hand about the initiatives the laboratory is currently leading in the area of communication networks. In addition, they have pointed out the benefits of the UNICO programme as a great vehicle for building an environment, team and equipment to pursue very ambitious research goals and move to the next level.

Carlos Jesús Bernardos, 5TONIC vice-president and UC3M full professor, led a guided facility tour showcasing the 5TONIC lab’s advanced technology. The members of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, were able to experience first-hand the importance of an open global environment in which members of industry and academia can work together in the development of 5G/6G technologies. “Our visitors observed a groundbreaking digital twin demonstration with integrated 5G sensing and robotic control capabilities, underscoring the value of this collaborative environment”, stressed Bernardos.

Visitors experienced IMDEA Networks’ diverse research projects, including:

  • LiFi Lab: Demonstrations of Visible Light Communication (VLC) research, featuring battery-free IoT devices powered and connected solely by light. Discussions also covered IMDEA Networks’ open-source hardware initiative, OpenVLC.
  • Millimeter-wave laboratory: Explorations of cutting-edge projects such as experimental hardware design platforms with exceptional capabilities.
  • IoT and Cyber Security lab: Insights into preventing unwanted program dissemination and personal data exposure within the Metaverse. Discussions tackled combating online fraud and disinformation alongside other ongoing research areas.

About 5TONIC

5TONIC was initiated by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute with a clear vision to create an open research and innovation ecosystem laboratory in which industry and academia come together to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development, joint entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites, all in an international environment of the highest impact. 5TONIC serves to show the capabilities and interoperation of pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications, by leading global companies in the 5G arena. The laboratory was recently awarded Digital Innovation Hub status by the European Commission.
